To start off, let us introduce you to J. Russell Stimmel, affectionately known as Rusty. Rusty was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1950 just a few years after World War II was over. His father, James Eugene Stimmel was a student at Ohio State University when Rusty was born to his mother Evelyn Rose Stimmel. He has one older sister, Patricia (Patty) and one younger brother, David. When Rusty was the age of 5, he and his family moved to southern California where Rusty lived the rest of his life until he graduated from college and decided to move to Eastern Idaho in 1973, where the fishing was great! Rusty became an avid fisherman at a young age, encouraged by his grandfather, Stimmy. Rusty worked as a Radio Analytical Chemist for most of his career until he retired from Lawrence Livermore National Labs in 2015.
Cynthia G. Stimmel, known as Cindy, was born in Rexburg, Idaho in 1959, several years after the Korean war ended. She was born into the family of Marlow Ellis Freckleton and Gayla June Dyas. She is the oldest daughter of 4, with two younger sisters, Cheri and Jill and a younger brother, Mark. Cindy was her dad’s fishing buddy until Mark got old enough to take her place. She loved going out in the boat with her dad and trolling for trout or fishing off a dock for sunfish and blue gill.
When Cindy was 18, she and Rusty met at a church fireside. Cindy was a senior in High School and Rusty had rotating shifts at work, so dating was interesting. When Rusty had a weekend off in the spring, he took Cindy fishing-his way, which was from the bank. Cindy wasn’t too sure about this, but went along anyway. Then in the summer, Cindy’s dad, Marlow, took Cindy, Rusty and Mark fishing from his boat. With the unintended help from Mark, Cindy caught the most fish while Rusty and Marlow caught none. Mark caught one. So, Rusty decided that Cindy must be OKAY if she could out fish him! They were married in Idaho Falls on August 6, 1977.
Now after 4 children and six grandchildren, and nearly 40 years of marriage, Rusty and Cindy are retired and starting their adventure-to catch a fish (native to the area) on a fly (hopefully a unique one to that fish) in all 50 states! After serving a 17-month mission for the LDS church doing Family History Document Preservation. In January of 2017, they ordered a Leisure Vans RV and picked it up May 8, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV. This will allow them to travel 49 of the 50 states. Their goal is to share this adventure via blog and u-tube with anyone interested in keeping track of their adventures.
Thank-you for joining us and please feel free to leave any comments, suggestions or help for our trip.
